Administrative Professional Council Cleans-Up Pueblo
Release Date: July 21, 2020
³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø employees from the Administrative Professional Council (APC) recently adopted a portion of highway in Pueblo to maintain as part of the Spruce Up Colorado program.
On Saturday, July 18 eight employees of ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø APC group cleaned up the area of Santa Fe Dr. to the intersection of Northern Ave. for a two mile stretch of Highway 50C, mile posts 2-4. Although groups split up to clean up, the area required more effort so the group will reconvene for another clean up on Saturday, July 25. Many ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø employees shared excitement to be part of the community service opportunity.
“First off it’s good for our community, that’s a big reason why I did it,” said Emma Mitchell, Independent Studies Program Coordinator at ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø.
The APC group pursued the opportunity of Spruce Up Colorado to bring groups across the ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø campus together and for the benefit of the Pueblo community. The project has been in the works for over a year with the Colorado Department of Transportation once the program was approved by the APC group last fall.
“Volunteering has always been important to me,” said Kathryn Starkey, Adult Learning/PLA Lead Specialist in the Division of Extended Studies at ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø and secretary of APC. “Since I came to ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø six years ago, Adopting a Highway has been a project I’ve always wanted to take on. Now that I’ve been part of APC’s leadership this past year, it seemed like a great opportunity to find a way for folks from our campus to get together and do something good for our community and the environment.”
Despite the coronavirus, COVID-19 pandemic, six different departments from across campus were represented during the first clean up date. The Spruce Up Colorado program schedules four clean up dates to take place per year over a span of two years.
“Now with the challenges we’ve been experiencing with COVID-19, we’re glad that we can have the chance to see some of our colleagues at a distance while still having a chance to serve our community,” said Starkey.
